According to the national department of Treasury a total of 21 Northern Cape municipalities owe Eskom arrears on 31 March 2023. The Treasury says as of 11 October 2023, 9 of these 21 Northern Cape municipalities applied for the Eskom Municipal Debt Relief Support Programme. The Treasury says the primary problem that the government wants to solve is Eskom’s financial and debt crisis which also requires a solution for non – payment of electricity consumption by municipalities. The deadline for the debt relief has been extended to 31 October 2023, to allow for more municipalities to apply.
