Total Lunar Eclipse to Be Visible Across South Africa This Sunday
Reports indicates that a total lunar eclipse will be visible across South Africa on Sunday, 07 September. Researches says, in Cape Town, the partial eclipse will start at moonrise (~18:24 SAST), with totality from ~19:30 to 20:52 and maximum eclipse at ~20:11. Johannesburg will see similar timings (moonrise ~17:49; totality ~19:30–20:52; maximum ~20:11).
Weather permitting, the South African Astronomical Observatory (NRF-SAAO) in Cape Town will host a public viewing. Members of the public can view the Moon through amateur telescopes and enjoy guided tours of the historic Main Building and the new Visitor Centre. Journalists are invited to attend. During totality, the Moon will appear deep red, creating the “blood moon” effect.
Partial phases will end around ~21:56,
with penumbral shading lingering until ~22:55. No eye protection is needed,
though binoculars or a small telescope will enhance the view. Photographers are
advised to stabilise cameras and adjust exposure for the best shots.
