Project IKI Growing Greener in Namakwa

Namakwa District Municipality says it recently took part in the official launch of Project IKI (International Climate Initiative) Growing Greener, hosted at Springbok Guest Farm. According to the municipality this regional initiative aims to restore and sustainably manage agro-pastoralist systems in open arid landscapes across Southern Africa.

According to the municipality, it recognizes that the future of Southern Africa’s arid regions hinges on sustainable practices that balance environmental health with economic resilience. The municipality says the project fosters market-oriented, community-led land-use strategies designed to halt environmental degradation and promote vibrant, sustainable rural economies.

Further information indicates that central to the project’s innovative approach is the "Herding for Health" (H4H) model—an evidence-based framework that guides sustainable rangeland and livestock management. The municipality says, while the project’s roots are in the Namakwa District, its impact resonates across borders—spanning Botswana, Madagascar, Zambia, and South Africa—each sharing the common challenge of managing arid landscapes sustainably.
