Representatives of Men for Change within SAPS at Correctional

Representatives of Men for Change within the South African Police Service in the Northern Cape engaged in dialogue with male inmates at the Upington Correctional Services facility yesterday, 5 August 2025. The South African Police Service says, the initiative formed part of efforts to address gender-based violence and femicide and to promote social accountability among incarcerated men.

In a statement, the police says the session began with an opening prayer and scripture reading by Chaplain Sekopane Mosetle, setting a reflective tone for the event.

Warrant Officer Mathews Mchlauli, champion of the Men for Change programme, outlined the purpose of the gathering. He said the primary focus was to raise awareness about GBVF and other social ills plaguing communities.

Mchlauli emphasized the importance of educating inmates on how to avoid patterns of domestic violence, femicide, and abuse, particularly in their relationships with women and vulnerable persons.

SAPS says this initiative aims to contribute toward long-term behavioural change and rehabilitation, reinforcing the role of men as protectors rather than perpetrators in society.
