SANParks marks MPA Day by showcasing Tsitsikamma’s inclusive conservation
South African National Parks says it celebrated Marine Protected Areas Day today, 1 August 2025, by highlighting the Tsitsikamma Marine Protected Area as a leading example of inclusive conservation. Created in 1964.
SANParks says, Tsitsikamma is Africa’s oldest MPA, protecting 60 km of coastline and 5.6 km out to sea.
According to research, once a strict no-take zone, it now allows controlled community
fishing along 20% of the shore, while 80% stays protected for more than 200
species, including the endangered red steenbras and eagle ray.
