Emerging Writers Find Their Voice in Namakwaland Writing Workshop
On May 23 and 24, 2025, a writing workshop took place at the Undulata Country Lodge in Namakwaland, bringing together approximately ten emerging writers from across the region. Facilitated by award-winning author Anzil Kulsen and organized by Dryzeen McDillon, the two-day event aimed to build writing skills and provide a structured platform for creative expression.
The workshop featured sessions on poetry and prose, with Kulsen incorporating interactive slides and practical exercises to guide participants through the writing process. Attendees engaged in various activities designed to strengthen their storytelling abilities and develop confidence in their writing.
Throughout the workshop, participants collaborated and connected over their shared interest in writing. Many noted that the environment encouraged both technical growth and personal reflection. According to participants, Kulsen’s facilitation not only enhanced their skills but also helped them better understand their potential as writers.
McDillon described the workshop as "magical and necessary," emphasizing the importance of creating spaces for creative development in rural areas. Kulsen's familiarity with the local context and challenges reportedly contributed to the supportive environment experienced during the event.
The workshop concluded with a session where participants presented selected pieces of their work, marking the end of the program with a focus on shared experience and creative achievement.
