Establishment of food gardens in schools: Broader initiative to promote eco-friendly environments and support sustainable food production.

The MEC for the Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Land Reform and Rural Development, Mase Manopole yesterday handed over food garden establishment packs to schools in the Namakwa District.

Dr Izak Van Niekerk Primary School and the SA Van Wyk Secondary School in Bergsig, Namakwa District, were the beneficiaries of the handover. The Department stated that the starter packs are part of a broader initiative to promote eco-friendly environments, support sustainable food production, improve learner nutrition, and equip schools with practical agricultural skills. During the handover, MEC Manopole reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to advancing food security across the Northern Cape.

Furthermore MEC Manoploe alluded that where food gardens already exist, the Department will strengthen and expand them. Additionally, where there are no food gardens, new food gardens will be established to promote food security and encourage eco-friendly practices.
