Upington Residents Highlight National Inequality Amid Johannesburg Budget Plans

While major cities like Johannesburg move forward with billion-rand infrastructure investments, residents in towns like Upington say they feel increasingly left behind—especially when it comes to job creation.

This comes after City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Dada Morero delivered the State of the City Address on 7 May 2025, themed “The Jo’burg We All Want.” In his address, Morero announced that R3 billion will be invested in infrastructure development over the medium term, with a focus on historically under-serviced areas including Diepsloot, Ivory Park, Orange Farm, and Soweto.

However, the announcement sparked frustration in other parts of the country. Community members in Upington, situated in the ZF Mgcawu District, say the persistent lack of economic opportunities in their region is being ignored.
