Community Outrage in Upington Over Acquittal of VIP Protection Officers
Residents in Upington have expressed serious concerns about community safety following the controversial acquittal of eight VIP Protection Unit officers. Civil rights organization Action Society has strongly condemned the court's decision, calling it a setback for justice and accountability.
The officers, part of Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s security detail, were caught on video in July 2023 violently dragging a motorist and his two passengers from their vehicle and assaulting them on the side of the N1 highway. The disturbing footage sparked national outrage.
According to Action Society spokesperson Juanita du Preez, despite multiple court appearances and a disciplinary hearing, all eight officers were acquitted of the assault charges.
Local residents are now voicing frustration and fear over the implications of the verdict.
